Hello!
It's November and you know what that means - National Novel Writing Month!
I surprised myself by finishing early this year. Over 50k words written by 21 November. It's definitely my fastest finish yet. This year I wrote a story that takes place after the floods created by climate change. It is set in the region where I live, which will all be underwater in 100 years. The Willamette Valley will be the Willamette Sea, that sort of thing. There are a lot of 'flood maps' available on line if you are interested in looking things up.
Meanwhile, back on land, we are getting closer to winter and it is getting quite chilly around here. There is a threat of snow in the forecast but it's unlikely to materialize. A snowy Turkey Day will have Portlanders in a panic! Good for our mountains, though. We need the moisture, in any form.
Holiday Plans: As I have done for the previous several years, I will be making a small dinner for my dad and my brother on Thursday. I think they enjoy it, I hope so. Then, I will be taking a short trip North to have a second (and probably more festive) Thanksgiving with my daughter and her husband on the weekend. I'll be counting my blessings on both occasions.
I went out with T this last weekend for dinner and a dance. Her birthday coincided with a lesbian dance that's held once or twice a month. She's actively looking for a new girlfriend. She hasn't had any luck with the long distance option, so she's looking locally. She didn't get any phone numbers this time, but I hope she finds someone nice.
Did I already tell you about this? A friend of mine from high school (!) has moved to Portland and he is an enthusiastic appreciator of live music. I have gone out with him several times to hear a variety of music. So far, the clear winners are a blue grass band and a Monday night jazz jam session. There is no way I would be doing this if I were still working - most of these shindigs don't get started until 8 or 9 pm. I'm not a night owl by any stretch, but I do force myself to go occasionally. I think Ken goes out several times a week but I can only manage it once every couple of weeks. Still, it's been fun. He's an interesting guy and makes friends easily so he's often got an entourage with him.
Do you remember that I made a braided denim rug last winter? It turned out great, by the way, and Pierre has not been too bad with the claw sharpening. My neighbor loved it so much that I told her I would make her one this winter. She's been collecting jeans all summer and now my living room looks like a denim factory. I've got the jeans all sorted by color (shades of blue) and the new rug is coming along. I'm making it slightly larger than the one I made myself. I have discovered that I like having a project to work on while I'm watching reruns of the baking show. Lol. (I watch other stuff too, but that is like my background music.)
Well, I'd better get out there and rake again. The deciduous trees are almost done dropping their leaves. My shoulder is feeling it!

July 2018
Well, well. I have now been
retired for one year. Ok, it was a year yesterday but today is still
early. How's it been going, you ask? Let me tell you...
Home front: mostly good! I
made a giant list a year ago and I have diligently chipped away at it. It
is about 3/4 completed. Of course, some of the list items can never be
crossed off, like weeding the yard. And, some have now come round again,
like powerwashing the deck. But, I knocked some big tasks off that I
don't have to do again and that is satisfying.
- The stairs - pulled up the ancient and disgusting carpet, sanded
and painted, added a handrail
- The plastic greenhouse - dismantled and recycled
- The catio - dismantled and repurposed or recycled most of the
materials
- Painted the eaves of the sun porch
There are more
projects. Some are partially complete so they don't get to be crossed off
yet. But, I'm making progress on lots of things and that feels really
good!
One of my
projects that will be ongoing for quite some time is the basement clean
up. I have stuck to my plan of getting a minimum of one box dealt with
every two weeks. The two week time frame is the trash pick up
schedule. Every time the trash is collected there has been stuff from the
basement in it. Every time! Progress is slow but steady and I can
see the difference. Sometimes there were multiple boxes or bags dealt
with, one day I got rid of five boxes! Still loads of crap to go through,
but it's happening.
Friend front:
mostly good! I have remained friends with T, and I'm glad about
that. I got to meet two of my blog friends, super good! I have seen
my two besties a couple of times during this year and that has been
great. I'm going down to So Cal in a week to spend some quality time with
one of them. The rancher continues to be a concern. Not as a
friend, of course, but as an obligation. Her situation isn't good and
there's only so much I can do for her. I can't fix her life, that's up to
her. I have to keep reminding myself of that.
In case you were
wondering, I found a new (better) housesitter. She's a friend from my
martial art training days. She has stayed twice and not adopted a puppy
either time! Big points there! Lol. Pierre has been well cared for and the garden has been watered so...
yes, Sara is the one.
Other, less
tangible things from this year of retirement: my stress level is way
down. I didn't have a particularly stressful job, but just getting there,
being there, doing the work, having deadlines, being away from home all day...
these things take their toll. Now, there are times when I check my phone
to be certain which day of the week it is. That's a huge improvement in
quality of life!
Another thing is
the increased ability to say Yes or No. To requests, to people, to
situations, to suggestions. Saying Yes
because I have time, and saying No because I don’t want to. I like it.
****
Well, that was
written on July 1 and not posted. Today
is July 31 and by golly it will be posted!
Since then, I
have been to Long Beach (CA) for a week and a half. Did some projects with/for Lisa. We had a good time, as we always do when we
get together. On the final couple of
days of my trip, our other buddy, KA, joined us. It was a somewhat impromptu get
together. She was in SoCal for a family
birthday and came to Lisa’s afterward, and spent the night. We had a lovely grilled salmon and sat up
talking until late. Very enjoyable.
Tomorrow I am
giving a presentation in a self defense class.
I haven’t taught the class all summer as I have been out of town so
much. I’m trying to ease out of that
work because it is so draining. It’s
important work. I want the youngsters to
step up and teach more of it though. Of
the frequent teachers over half of us are retirement age.
Also tomorrow my
best neighbors are going to NYC to visit their son. That means that I get to have their dog for a
few days. Yay! I love Angus, he’s a great little dog. I also have chicken duty and garden watering
to take care of. Those fresh eggs are
delicious.
Speaking of
delicious, a couple of days ago I put a pair of fried eggs on top of a pair of
tamales. Wow! Why have I never done that before?!? If you are a tamale fan, give it a try. It was good!
Ok, I’d better
wind this up. I have stuff to do and I
don’t want to get distracted for another month.
Thanks for
reading, friends!

How is May almost over???
Hey Women,
How has spring been treating you? Have you had some sun and flowers and green
grass? Have you had long pleasant
evenings sitting on the porch with the neighbors, sipping a cool glass of
something? I hope so. I have.
Doesn’t it feel good?
Here’s my catch up:
The countdown to retirement is on! Still feeling a trifle ambivalent, but doing
it anyway. There have been some mornings
that I have felt quite resentful at having to go in. Ha!
Soon. Very, very soon. In fact, it’s 25 work days (counting my work
from home days). Yikes! I’d better keep scanning!
So, T and I finally cashed out our vacation fund and went to
Hawai’i . We spent a week on Maui
and had a really good time. We got along
surprisingly well! We did a few things,
but mostly hung out and relaxed. It was
very pleasant. She might have roped me
into a deal where I end up with a tattoo… I breathed a sigh of relief when all
of the clean and reputable places in Lahaina were booked up. If it happens, and I wouldn’t be adamantly
opposed to it, a small image of a sea turtle, possibly on the inside of my
calf. If it ever happens. I really wish we had seen one while we were snorkeling. We saw plenty of fish, and we saw the turtles
all the time coming up for air while grazing on the reef. And, while they were in the same area that we
were snorkeling, at the same time, we never saw one through our masks. But, we still felt like we were swimming in
their back yard.
I’m going to have to postpone my car trip. I’ve got to sort out a better vehicle. My car is a 1999 Audi. I bought it from my sister in law for $2000 a
year or two ago. I’ve had to shell out
for a couple of repairs, and I’m afraid there’s just a whole lot more of that
in this car’s future. It’s a decent
small car and I rarely drive, so it has served me well enough. I have taken it to Seattle a couple of times,
but it’s had a couple of issues since then so I’m thinking that it might be
just an around town car now.
Speaking of Seattle ,
my niece and I are going up for a baseball game with Zoe next week! Fun!
We are taking the train up on Friday, doing some touristy stuff in Seattle
and then taking an express bus to the east side. Zoe will pick us up and will spend the night
at her house. Then, her town is having
it’s ‘town celebration’ that weekend so we will hang out there and see what
there is to see. Saturday evening is the
baseball game – Mariners vs the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Mariners have been playing so badly!
I hope none of you saw that game we lost that was something like 10 to
1. Ugh.
So. Bad. So, yes, after the game
we’ll go back to Zoe’s, spend the night, have her take us to Seattle
the next day and take the train home. It
will be a good weekend away. T is not
coming. We’ll have to spend some time
with Z’s husband, but it’ll be fine.
I haven’t gotten any gardening done this spring. All I’ve done is pull weeds. I know that I could still put some veggies
in, if I bought some starts, but I think I’ll let the garden lie fallow this
year. Maybe I’ll plant a nitrogen fixing
cover crop. I’ve got garlic growing,
leftovers from the last harvest. I’ve
got blueberries and raspberries and huckleberries and herbs. Thyme, chives, rosemary. And I’ve got two plentiful rhubarbs. But, I have a lot of empty space in my raised
beds.
Hey, I actually had some other stuff to say, but I have to
go over to my dad’s house. It’s
Wednesday night – that’s what we do! So,
I’m going to go ahead and post this nonsense, because you know how I am. If I procrastinate at all, it just doesn’t
happen.
Thanks for reading, friends!
