Oh dear...

We were watching something on the news lately, something about archeology or anthropology, and my gf said, “Oh, he must be one of those nuts who think people came from monkeys.”

Where do I even start? Where do I go from there?

I’m starting to think that our differences could become insurmountable.

May the force be with you on this one.

well...she may be onto something. didn't the monkey actually represent a split in the timeline of evolution? that must be what she is referring to. I believe we both evolved from apes on our own path.
she is a genius.

How long have you been together? Has this topic of conversation not come up before?

Jen~ that was my reaction.

Weese~ you are funny! But, she calls all primates monkeys...

Liz~ i knew she was a Christian, but she is not at all religious and in two years, no, evolution vs creationism has never come up.

My partner is a registered Republican. That's what love does - allows you to live with the weirdness.

Differences can be a good thing - all hope is not lost!

8dp~ you are a brave and non-judgmental woman. Thankfully T is a democrat!

Greg~ I haven't given up hope... yet. And, I don't need her to be just like me; differences can be a very good thing.

That's a big one. I want to say something comforting and witty, but all I can come up with is, "Good luck with that." Ouch.

There are big differences between my partner and I: but not at our core or our values. This seems like a core issue to me, but so would politics.

First, tell her people did not come from monkeys and evolutionists do not believe this. It's a simple soundbite conjured up by those opposed to evolution.

Tell her it's no different than people conjuring up inflammatory soundbites in an effort to thwart gay marriage.

Check this out:

Suggest to her that maybe evolution is God's plan. If God created everything, then surely God created evolution. If she actually believes in a young earth, then ask her for me why God put dinosaur bones around for us to find. Perhaps God is a practical joker.

Good luck. I've had lively debates about such things with Christians and as long as you can agree to disagree, it can be fun.

If you told me this in person, I would have to ask: So then what did you say? And then what did she say? etc. How exactly does she explain away science? Personally I think the debate would be kind of fun, if no one got defensive about their position.

But there are always going to be differences of opinion between 2 people, don't you think? You just have to decide which ones are worth overlooking.
